We are wrapping up a month-long stay at Annilaun Lodge in Connemara and wish we could add a second month -- not merely to extend our holiday but because the house is so superb. The Lodge offers the comfortable elegance of old Irish country living with all the modern conveniences of a 21st century city dwelling -- from Wi-Fi and satellite TV to a kitchen equipped for a chef. It is a place, therefore, of utter relaxation in security and style.
The house sits at the top of Cashel Bay and the sea, with its brilliant sunsets offers a picture-postcard view from all the front windows of the house. Inside, the house is equally stunning, with beautiful art and tasteful furnishings. It is truly a location and a home in which to lose oneself. The grounds are manicured and provide a feeling of privacy. When the gates are closed it is a world unto itself.
In the vicinity is the charming fishing village of Roundstone with excellent restaurants and a vibrant pub scene with international visitors. Also nearby is the town of Clifden, which offers the same on a larger scale. In this part of Connemara you have everything you need at your fingertips but are still in the middle of some of Ireland's most beautiful, wild landscapes for trekking, bicycling, and sailing. My husband is a fisherman and for him the region is paradise.

About the Locality
There is a cosy country pub just a few minutes walk away, but Roundstone 13 km around the bay is the nearest town for provisions. There are a number of very fine restaurants here with lots of fish on the menu.
The village buzzes in the evenings as visitors and locals alike gather above the naturally sheltered harbour to share a yarn and a pint.

The exquisite twin beaches of Gurteen Bay and Dogs Bay are a couple of kilometres further. The pair sit back-to-back along a sandy peninsula or tombolo - a rare tidal accumulation of the remains of microscopic shellfish.

For Golfers, the magnificent and scenic eighteen hole Connemara Championship Golf links is just 25K away across some fabulous bog land scenery.

Keep your eyes open for the hardy Connemara Pony. A breed collected internationally, they are known for their athleticism, versatility and good disposition

The area is dominated by the majestic Twelve Bens (or Pins), a series of craggy mountains in Connemara National Park that are a magnet to the serious hill walker.

The area between Clifden and Roundstone to the South, contains over 365 bog-land lakes of various sizes. But it is the fast flowing rivers that have made Connemara the Mecca of Trout and Salmon fly-fishing.
